New Year's Day is the first official day of the year on the Gregorian calendar, which is used by most countries in the world. Traditionally, the New Year is celebrated with festivities on both January 1st and on the evening before, called New Year's Eve.

Many large cities celebrate the ringing in of the New Year with a countdown leading up to midnight on New Year's Eve and, often, fireworks and parties. In America, the new year is brought in with the singing of Auld Lang Syne, a toast, and a kiss for your sweetheart, while New Year's Day is traditionally a restful day that includes parades and football games.
